There are really only 2 things you NEED to kayak: a kayak, and a paddle.
A 3rd highly recommended item: a PFD.
But, there are so many more things that can add to the experience by making it more comfortable, more enjoyable, and safer.
Here are some of the best kayaking accessories to elevate your kayaking experience…

Keep your paddle secured to the kayak with a paddle leash. The strap easily attaches the paddle to the kayak to prevent the paddle from floating away should you tip.
Improve comfort and grip, and avoid blisters on your hands with a pair of paddle grips that slide onto your paddle.
If you haven’t heard of a dry bag, you NEED one! These amazing things have saved my belongings many times.
Dry bags can keep your items nice and dry during your float. They can get pricey depending on the brand and size, but the smaller bags are under $20.

My favorite, unassuming kayaking accessories are carabiners. They work great for securing all types of items in a kayak. With a little creativity, and maybe some straps, almost anything can be attached to a kayak!
I always stay stocked with fishing lanyards! It’s an extension of the carabiner but with a flexible leash for items that need to move around a little more for use. I attach one to my waterbottle to keep if from floating off if I tip the kayak.
Most of the time it’s enough to kick back and listen to the sounds of nature. But sometimes it’s nice to throw on some music and sing your way down the river.
Waterproof phone pouches are a good way to keep your phone protected, dry, and usable at the same time.
A small, fast-drying towel is always a good kayaking accessory to store inside of your dry bag. They are perfect for cleaning and drying your smaller items (sunglasses, phone) should they get dirty or wet.
Secure your sunglasses with a sunglasses strap in case of tipping! Or so you don’t set them down and leave them. You would be amazed at how many lost sunglasses I have found on the river.
Having a safety whistle is always good practice with outdoor adventures. A whistle can be blown in case of emergency if you need help or get lost.

I think that a cooling towel is great not o ly for kayaking but also for travelling. To be honest, I’ve never heard of it before. This thing is beyond my imagination LOL Now I know 😃
Definitely used a board leash but haven’t tried a paddle leash. Interesting suggestion!
Great suggestions for kayaking accessories. One can never be too prepared in life. I like the waterproof phone pouches it’s perfect to keep our phone protected, dry, and usable at the same time!
LOVE the quote, “Learn to Kayak because zombies can’t swim!” Made me laugh out loud.
Love kayaking with my Dad so some great ideas to take advantage of here! 🙂
I’ve always wanted to try this . Let me know if you know of any good places that will guide a beginner. Thanks for the article.
Depends on where you are located! Local river outfitters are a good resource if you are renting a kayaking. Local kayak stores are a good resource if you are buying a kayak and will be going out on your own. Online kayaking groups are helpful also! If you happen to be in Northwest Arkansas, I can help you out!
Nice list! I’ll keep it in mind for my son’s birthday coming up – he has his own kayak.
As a kayaker, I would LOVE to get any of these! You can’t go wrong with something from this list.
So useful! I love a paddle!
Thank you for this great list! My sister and I are just starting to get more into kayaking and I definitely need some of these things
Check out some of my other posts on kayaking! What area are you guys in?
Great list! I used to kayak a lot more years ago. Thanks for the reminder to get back into it.
I have that fan! It’s great. I’ll be adding some items to my list.
The fan is a life saver!
