Nothing beats a good hike. It’s good for the body, mind, and soul. Hiking can be as simple or as diverse as you like (and plan) it. But there are a few pitfalls to avoid.

There are a few reasons why hiking alone, especially for beginners, isn’t the safest option.
Emergencies: If you get injured on the trail, having someone with you can make a big difference. They can help you get assistance or provide immediate aid. If you go alone, make sure you know what to do in any situation that may occur.
Navigation: Even experienced hikers can get turned around, especially on unmarked trails or in unfamiliar territory. A buddy can help you navigate with a map and compass, or double-check your route.

Safety in Numbers: Unfortunately, there are rare instances of crime on hiking trails. Having a companion deters suspicious activity and makes you a less appealing target.
Wildlife: Wild animals are generally more likely to avoid groups of people. Having someone with you can provide a sense of security, especially in areas with larger predators.
However, hiking alone isn’t entirely off-limits. If you’re an experienced hiker and take some precautions, it can be a rewarding adventure. Here are some safety tips for solo hiking:
Tell Someone Your Plans: Always inform a friend or family member about your hike, including your route, estimated duration, and planned return time. Update them if anything changes.

Many places I hike in the Ozarks do not have cell phone reception. Leave a friend or family member with a detailed plan and the emergency number for the hiking area. Give them an estimated time you will return, and if they don’t hear from you by a certain time, call the number provided.
Choose the Right Trail: Stick to well-maintained, well-marked trails with good visibility, especially for your first solo hikes. Avoid remote areas or challenging trails until you’re more comfortable.
Listen to Your Body: Don’t push yourself too hard. Be aware of your limitations and turn back if you feel unwell, exhausted, or the weather worsens.
Ultimately, the decision to hike alone depends on your comfort level and experience. By following safety precautions and choosing appropriate trails, you can minimize the risks and enjoy a solo hike.
Always check the weather forecast before you head out. Hiking CAN be done in any weather, but each season and conditions take some extra prep for maximum safety.
Rain? Make sure your hiking gear is covered. And take some hiking poles to avoid slips in muddy areas.
Hot? Plan your hike early to avoid the hottest part of the day.
Cold? Dress in layers. Layers keep you warm when it’s cold, and can be taken off as your warm-up from the hiking.
Tornado? Avoid hiking. 😉

Bring plenty of water and pack more snacks than you think you’ll need. A first-aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, a map and compass, and a flashlight or headlamp are also essential items.
I always keep extra food and water, and a change of clothes in the car for the post-hike clean up and recoup.
Stay on designated trails to avoid getting lost and to minimize your impact on the environment.
I’ll admit I may be a bit of a hypocrite on this rule. I will sometimes go off-trail, especially if I hear water (waterfall?!). To avoid making new trails, I try to follow game trails and always have a strong sense of where I am in relation to the trail.
Never approach or feed wild animals. Give them plenty of space and avoid loud noises. When hiking alone, I talk out loud along the way and make plenty of noises so that I don’t surprise and animal along the way.
There are risks associated with hiking. But with the right planning and safety precautions, those risks can be minimized so that you can immerse yourself in nature and enjoy the numerous benefits of hiking!
