According to Oxford Languages, hiking is defined as “the activity of going for long walks, especially in the country or woods.”
The Cambridge Dictionary defines hiking as “the activity of going for long walks in the countryside.” And Wikipedia says “Hiking is a long, vigorous walk, usually on trails or footpaths in the countryside.”
Everyone has their own definition of hiking that varies slightly. To me, hiking is simply walking through nature on varied terrains. Sometimes it’s vigorous. And sometimes it’s not.
But it always includes being in nature and not on a paved trail. The definition really doesn’t really matter. Find whatever you want to call “hiking“, and do it!
One of the most obvious benefits of hiking is the physical activity that it provides. Walking on uneven terrain, climbing hills, and carrying a backpack can all add to a great workout.
Hiking is a low-impact exercise that is easy on the joints and can be done at your own pace and your own challenge level. It can help you to build endurance, improve your cardiovascular health, and increase your overall strength.
Studies have shown that hiking can burn up to 500 calories per hour, depending on the terrain and your level of exertion.
One of the physical benefits of hiking is the exposure to sunlight, which can help to boost your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is important for healthy bones and immune function, and many people do not get enough of it through diet alone.
The benefits of hiking go beyond the physical and impact your mental health. One of the benefits of hiking is an improved mood. Being outside in nature has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and boost overall mental well-being.
Studies have found that spending time in nature can help to lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone). Hiking can also help to increase your focus and attention, which can be beneficial for those with ADHD or other attention disorders.
One unique aspect of hiking is the sense of accomplishment that comes from reaching your intended destination (an overlook, mountain top, or even just a loop).
This can help to boost self-esteem and confidence, which can have a positive impact on mental health.
Hiking can also provide a break from the stress of everyday life and give you a chance to disconnect from technology and connect with nature.
In addition to the physical and mental benefits, the benefits of hiking can have a positive impact on your emotional well-being. Being outside in nature can help you become more aware of the world around you and feel more connected to it.
It can help strengthen your appreciation and gratitude for the beauty of the natural world around you.
For example, if you hike to a waterfall: see the water flow, smell the flowers, hear the flow of water hitting the rocks, and feel the mist blowing off the falls.
Hiking provides a great opportunity to practice mindfulness by focusing on your breath, your steps, and the natural environment around you.
Hiking can be a great way to connect with others and build social relationships. It can be a fun activity to do with friends and family.
Hiking through new surroundings and unfamiliar trails is a good “team building” activity. Experiencing new amazing sights with friends and family builds bonds and lifetime memories.
Hiking can provide a sense of belonging and connection to a larger community of outdoor enthusiasts.
Joining a hiking group or club can be a great way to meet new people and build relationships with others who share your interests. Facebook is an easy way to search for hiking groups in your area.
While there are many forms of exercise that can provide physical and mental health benefits, hiking has some advantages.
Unlike some other forms of exercise, hiking provides an opportunity to be outside in nature and explore new environments. It can be a low-impact form of exercise that is easier on the joints than high-impact activities like running or jumping.
Hiking can also be a more engaging and enjoyable form of exercise than other activities like going to the gym or working out at home. The constantly changing scenery and natural environment can make the experience more interesting and engaging.
With your focus on the beauty of your surroundings, you are less likely to notice fatigue. And the thoughts of the next hike, and what incredible things you may find and see will keep you motivated to go again (and again).

If you are interested in getting started with hiking, there are a few things to keep in mind.
First, start with shorter and easier hikes to build up your endurance and get used to being outside in nature. Make sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the terrain.
It can also be helpful to find a hiking partner or group to join, especially if you are new to hiking. This can provide a sense of safety and community, as well as an opportunity to learn from more experienced hikers.
Finally, make sure to do your research before heading out on a hike. Check the weather forecast, trail conditions, and any necessary permits or regulations before beginning your adventure.
Goal Planning
Your Ultimate Guide to Life goals
When it comes to hiking gear, there are a few essentials that you will need to invest in. First, a good pair of hiking boots or shoes is essential for providing support and traction on uneven terrain.
You will also need a sturdy backpack to carry water, snacks, and other essentials, as well as a map, compass, or GPS device to navigate the trail.
Other helpful items to bring along include sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and sunglasses.
If you plan on hiking in colder weather, you will also need to invest in warm layers and insulated gear.
Finally, make sure to bring a first aid kit and know how to use it in case of an emergency.
No matter where you live, there are likely plenty of hiking trails nearby to explore. Many local parks and nature reserves have hiking trails that are perfect for beginners and experienced hikers.
Do some research online or check with your local parks and recreation department to find the best hiking trails in your area.
Blogs (like this one!) can offer more in-depth information on what to expect on specific trails. Such as-
You can also use an app, like AllTrails, to find hiking trails. The free version is sufficient to search trails near you, see the trail map and distance, directions to the trail, and read reviews from others who have hiked that trail.
If you choose, there is also a paid version with more options available. I have used the free version for a couple of years with no issues.

Great post! I love hiking 🙂 It was one of my favorite things to do while I lived in California. Now I need to “re-adopt” this old habit of mine here in Belgium…Even if I’m sure that the views will be very different, haha!
I would love to hike California!! I’m sure every area has it’s own special + unique views that are spectacular! And I would only hope I could make it to Belgium one day!
I enjoy hiking too! Like you said in your post, it’s a great way to exercise and spend time with family or friends. We have plenty of hiking spots here in the UK but it’s a matter of waiting for the right weather because I def do not want to be caught in the rain out on a hike with a young child!
Taking children along definitely adds more to the planning process!
I’d love to get out and do some hiking! Hoping in the near future to be able to do so. I love that you have your pup along with you for the adventures.
The pup keeps us motivated. If we haven’t done anything for a few days, she gets a little antsy and encourages us to get out.
I enjoy being out side and hiking. There really are so many great benefits for emotional and mental health as well as physical, too. I love taking my pup with me as well!
We always take pup along!!
I love to hike! When I was young and single, I dreamed of going somewhere and hiking solo, exploring what was around the next bend. I finally did it at Arches. This was back before social media and there was something very empowering to me about being on a trail all by myself just taking in the sights and enjoying the solitude.
Arches is definitely on my bucket list!!
I love hiking! It’s one of my favorite outdoor activity. You get a free workout in and being around nature us very calming and can really improve your anxiety. Great post
Any activity outdoors almost doesn’t feel like “exercise” to me! I love it so much!
Great post! So many benefits to hiking. I moved to Croatia in 2021 and joined a hiking group shortly after. It was great for my mental and physical health. I imagine it helped tremendously through my first year living in a new country and community. I learned things like what to wear, hiking trails, the history of parts of Croatia, and so much more…all while hiking. It really doesn’t take much 🙂
